Here's an exciting little announcement that crossed my inbox this morning: our friends at Dark Horse Comics have partnered up with Trackers PDX to put together...wait for it... B.P.R.D. Camp, a.k.a. "Hellboy Camp". "Hellboy Camp" is a week long youth summer camp for 9 to 17-year olds (I know, I'm depressed to be too old, too) that promises to teach potential recruits to the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense such handy skills for defeating supernatural and paranormal threats as environmental survival, self-defense, and forensic investigation. Campers will also spend time exploring Portland, Oregon, and investigating the legend of regional homesteader Adolph Ascoff. B.P.R.D. Camp takes place July 16-20, from 7:30 am to as late a 6:00 pm (sorry, PDX non-locals, it's a day-camp experience only), and offers a 10% discount for campers who register before February 22nd. Dark Horse Comics and Hellboy/B.P.R.D. creator Mike Mignola fully back the project, and if hunting ghosts and torching Frogs isn't your thing, Trackers offers several other unique classes for youths and adults (including themes such as pirates, ninjas, and fantasy settings) in both Portland, OR and California's Bay Area.

According to Neowin.net, Anonymous has been launching a full-on assault against several government and media company websites in response to the Justice Department and FBI's shutdown of popular file-sharing site MegaUpload. Infamous hacker group Anonymous has already claimed credit for crashing the website for The Department of Justice, Universal Music Group, RIAA, and MPAA. Other as yet unclaimed attacks have knocked off Copyright.gov, BMI.com, and the personal website of MPAA Chief Chris Dodd. Anonymous also has launced a drop of the Utah Chiefs of Police's database. Anonymous communications over Twitter have been chattering over attacking FBI.gov and WhiteHouse.gov, but as of this writing that haven't been taken down yet. This isn't going to end well. The Internet Blackout Protest yesterday won a ton of support against the SOPA/PIPA bills, but I have a hard time believing that support is going to stay in place when spin doctors start associating Anonymous's actions with the bill backlash.

Portal 2 is an exceedingly well-made game. The graphics are flawless, the voice acting is Pixar caliber, and the gameplay is solid and intriguing. And we're talking about a puzzle game here, a title that shares a genre with Yoshi's Cookie and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. Portal 2 deserves a serious glance for anyone's "Editor's Choice" or "Game of the Year" lists, but if you'll indulge me, I'd like to tell you what the real tipping point in this title was for me.
The book was always better than the movie--that's pretty much a universal truth that everyone but forum trolls and dedicated contrarians have come to accept, but outside of small get-togethers featuring small-numbered morning hours and fueled by several bottles of wine and/or pots of coffee, its not something that people analyze regularly. Everyone has their own opinion on this phenomenon, I'm sure, but for me the short-fall of film has always been the lack of personal experience.
Read this sentence:
The dog played in the sunny meadow.
Now, think about what images that stirs up from the recesses of your imagination.
For me, I see a basset hound hopping the lower rung of a rustic wooden fence prancing about in an alpine field, bright-colored wildflowers here and there, with large evergreen conifers in surrounding the meadow's boundary. Most likely, that's not what you saw, and even if it was, there would be discrepancies. Heck, even when I break down the details and tell you what I visualize there's discrepancies between the image in your head and the image I envisioned: whether the dog is in a hurry or lazily taking his time, the construction of the fence, the quantity and colors of the wildflowers, etc.
Those mental images are personal to us; no one else on the planet shares them, and whether we realize it or not, that makes us personally invested in the story. The image in your mind is perfect, because it was made by you, for you, and expert writers know how to tap into that power of self-involvement.
Movies, on the other hand, have lost the art of self-involvement. Compare the original 1963 The Haunting with the 1999 remake. The remake involves scary cherub statues coming to life and people getting their heads knocked off on-screen. Those are scary images, because we imagine ourselves being in the position of the movie's heroes and being confronted with these events, but our imagination ends at the boundaries the director and his visual effects department establish for us. Maybe cherub statues are disturbing, but after you take a moment to collect yourself, you realize that it's a foot tall and made of delicate porcelain, two traits which generally don't fall into the category of "threat" for us.
Compare that to the 1963 original version of The Haunting, a movie largely regarded by fans and critics as terrifying because you never see the monster. Period. Ever. You see the results of the creature's actions (the house shakes, chandeliers swing, walls and doors bow and buckle) but you never see the creature itself, which means you're stuck having to imagine what it is yourself. Your brain has been given a sentence to read:
There is a supernatural creature on the other side of the door that can bend walls and shake houses, and it sounds like it is angry at you.
Whatever it is on the other side of the door, it is perfect for you, which means that it is personal, which means that you are invested in it.
This theory of course applies to the world of games, as well. Veteran gamers have a soft spot for blocky, retro, ugly, poor-controlling games of yesteryear largely in part of the internal stories they made up within the game they were playing. Game stories in early generations were as vague and lacking in detail as the graphics were, and players would often mentally piece together their own explanations for the things they saw on-screen. Even as recently as GTA: San Andreas, the legend of a ghost car that will appear in the woods and try to run you down is actually nothing more than a glitch that spawns a car in the forest environment, but people's minds and imaginations created a story to explain an occurrence that didn't make sense to them. It's like a self-contained universe whose inhabitants have developed their own mythology, which creates a whole new layer of philosophical thinking that I'm going to actively avoid since I've already unintentionally turned this game recommendation into an essay on game theory.
Back to the topic at hand: Portal 2 hits the magical sweetspot between shoving a story in your face and asking you to fill in the gaps, in a way that few developers apart from Valve are able to do. From a story telling perspective, they hit all the strides and hit them well: in-world characters give you necessary exposition without making it feel like you're being narrated to, the environments are expertly crafted to convey not just the story you're playing but also the story that happened before you got there, and a skillful lack of cutscenes not only keeps you in the story the whole time, it also keeps the story in you.
Throughout their catalog, Valve has garnered a niche in the gaming universe that is strenuously hard to work yourself into, and impossible to obtain by accident: they want you to try to break their game. Hidden areas abound in Valve games, Portal 2 being no exception, usually stuffed with extra tidbits of story and winks and nudges to long time fans, and the key to finding them is a healthy mental mantra of "I wonder if I can..." permeating your play style.
A rare joy of gaming is when you have to opportunity to watch a friend play through a game you've already experienced and observe the difference in choices they make. Portal 2 stood out during a round of back-seat playing in the way that I would watch another player skip over Easter eggs that I had discovered only to find new ones that I had missed, and always because he was thinking "I wonder if I can...", but in a slightly different way than I did.
It may seem obvious to say that the entire game builds up to the finish, but Portal 2 is so expertly crafted that it takes on a whole new meaning. As a player you've been subtly manipulated to finish the game exactly as is scripted, but you don't realize it until it's over. You make the decision to finish the game the way it ends, even though technically you never had another choice, but it feels genuinely like your choice. It feels like you were trying to break the game, like you were playing a round of "I wonder if I can...".
It's a thing of sublime beauty. No one can ever take the ending of Portal 2 away from you. It doesn't matter that from a software perspective that there is no other option, or that from a storytelling perspective it's the obviously poetic and heroic ending. For a split-second, it was you that made the decision--it wasn't Chell, it wasn't the game designer, it was you and your imagination. Just for a moment it it was all you.
It's the goal of every game designer, every film director, every author, to create that experience where, if for even just a moment, the audience has that perfect moment of being part of the story. Portal 2 nails it. There's a word for creative works that are so complete, and that word is 'masterpiece'. Its involvement of the self is absolute, and unlikely to be matched again for some time. You are invested in it, it is personal, and it is perfect.

With the upcoming Xbox 360 Dashboard update set to hit, one of the most innovative features will be the integration of the Bing search engine with the dashboard interface.
Hopes for a web browser open interface with Bing are still not in the plans for Microsoft, but what the Bing Kinect voice integration apparently does do is provide a convenient way to find 'stuff' in the Xbox LIVE marketplace related to your search.
Below are some snippets from the Bing tech team regarding this feature:
Our goal with features like Bing on Xbox is to make Bing available in convenient and intuitive ways that take advantage of the capabilities of your device. You can see this today with features like: voice search on Bing for Mobile, implicit search such as Local Scout on Windows Phone, the ability to search using your phone’s camera with Bing Vision, and touch/contextual search through the Lasso feature on the Bing for iPad. With Bing on Xbox, we are introducing a more natural way to search on the TV. And as a result, you can spend more time enjoying your entertainment, and far less time hunting for it.
Bing on Xbox voice search will initially be available in English in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. for select Zune video, Xbox LIVE Marketplace and select content partners. For those who do not have a Kinect for Xbox 360, text search, via the Xbox 360 controller, is available in Xbox LIVE markets.

No Browser For You!
The Playstation Vita PS button during game play brings up many option including your friends list, access to native apps like Twitter, and your music collection. Unfortunately one option that will not be available is Vita's web browser... If you want to open the browser, you will have to exit the game entirely. Sony hints at a future OS upgrade to enable this option, but they have confirmed that this will not be available out of the gate.
The highly anticipated Playstation Vita is set to release on February 22, 2012 in North America.

About Amazon Cyber Monday Deals Week:
Cyber Monday Deals Week--Amazon's follow-up to Black Friday Deals Week--features low prices and sales on electronics, video games, DVDs, and more
So what is Cyber Monday/Cyber Week?
The term Cyber Monday refers to the Monday immediately following Black Friday, the ceremonial kick-off of the holiday online shopping season in the United States between Thanksgiving Day and Christmas. Whereas Black Friday is associated with traditional brick-and-mortar stores, "Cyber Monday" symbolizes a busy day for online retailers, and one in which online stores offer low prices and promotions.

For Nintendo 3DS gamers, the eShop has the classic Metroid II: Return of Samus for $3.99.
This is epic sequal to the NES classic Metroid, which probably still is one of my favorite platformers from that era...
Even with the stark black & white background, and considering it has been 20 years since it's release, for $3.99, you really can't beat it...
Features:
* Story mode with 8 selectable characters * 40 mind bending missions to solve before time runs out * Achieve the highest score in an endless marathon mode * 2 Player VS mode * Original storylines, endings, dialogues and voice acting for each character * Guided tutorial to easily introduce the “easy to learn but hard to master” game mechanic
